PROMPT#4: It is better to use your knowledge and experience to solve problems than ask other people for advice. Do you agree or disagree?

The question/prompt for today was: “It is better to use your knowledge and experience to solve problems than ask other people for advice. Do you agree or disagree?” I personally agree with using your own knowledge and experience of the past to solve a problem rather than asking other people for advice. At first, I agreed with the other side of the prompt that you should ask other people for help and listen to their advice. It never hurts anyone to ask questions or problems you do not know to a more intelligent student or friend in order to strengthen your knowledge and learn something new. The problem I found in asking other people for their advice all the time was what if you were alone? What if you did not know something and no one was there? That would reach a problem because for a person who has become used to a life of asking others for help all the time, it would be difficult for them to think individually in order to find their own answers.  Therefore, I strongly believe that for the benefits of everyone, it is better to use your knowledge and experience that you already know and have to solve problems rather than asking others for help and advice.
It is important to be able to do things without anyone’s help. It’s not like the person who is helping you would be there forever. Everyone moves on, and for individuals to move on, they should have their own knowledge and thoughts and should not depend on other people’s advice all the time. For example, a girl I knew in middle school had a tutor who helped her with all of her homework. I envied her because she got perfect scores on all of the homework grades while I got a few points taken off for grammatical errors. When I had to stay up really late to finish up my essay, she would say she finished her essay with her tutor and slept really early. I was young back then, so I thought to myself that time, maybe if I also got a tutor, the tutor could help me get better grades. After I thought about it for a while, I just erased that thought from my head and promised myself that I could do better by putting more effort into my work than that girl who had a tutor. After a week we took our chapter test, and it was to write an essay in 40 minutes. I finished in time and turned my essay in, but when I saw the other girl she had nothing written on her paper. It turns out; she had gotten so used to her tutor helping her that when she had to write an essay by herself, she could not think of anything to write about. Having a tutor is not a bad thing, because that tutor could help you to understand things you do not get, but you should not have a tutor that does everything for you. This showed me the necessity and significance of being able to do your own work individually.

Making good decisions are an important part of life that could change a person’s lifestyle in the future. My English teacher, Mr. Lee always told me that how much you study now could change your future husband’s face and job. I believe that everyone is responsible for taking care of their own life. A person should never let anyone make decisions and choices for them. As an individual, people should make their own decisions and learn how to stand up for themselves. It may be hard at first to ignore the advice from others but in the long run, everyone as individuals would be proud of themselves for making that choice to use their own knowledge and experience rather than ask other people for their advice and answers.

PROMPT 3: Favorite Metaphor of Love

Today’s blog topic is about my FAVORITE METAPHOR OF LOVE. I don’t really know a lot about love metaphors in general, but I would say “LOVE IS AN ADVENTURE” is my favorite love metaphor. The topic was to pick which metaphor is your favorite, but even though I chose this metaphor as my favorite love metaphor; my favorite metaphor can always change if I find out about another interesting love metaphor.  Dictionary.com defines metaphor as a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance and as something used, or regarded as being used, to represent something else; emblem; symbol. Summarizing the long definition, a metaphor simply compares one thing to another without using the words "Like" or "As". (If the sentence has “Like” or “As”, then it would be a simile)

LOVE IS AN ADVENTURE is saying that love is an adventure meaning that love could be fun but at the same time could be challenging in many ways. I chose this metaphor because I believe that love is truly an adventure. Adventures are not always perfect. An adventure can become a disaster and ruin a person’s life but support the person who ruined their life an experience that they would have never got if that person had not gone through this specific experience of going through the disaster. Mistake made at a certain place or time during their adventure shows the difficulties of love.  Love is not perfect, and an adventure is also not perfect, which completely describes the two words to relate to each other in an interesting way. An adventure is the start of a new journey in which numerous events can happen that can lead to conflicts or happiness. I strongly believe that love is essential in a person’s lifetime. Even plants need love. My mom started a garden a few months ago, and as I saw the plants growing, I also wanted to plant my own plants. This is the reason why I went to the hardware store to buy my own plant holder and fertilizer. I put a tomato seed in the dirt and closed it up so that it could grow nicely. I was too busy with my own work that I never really took care of my plant, and one day I saw it and it was dying while every other plant was getting bigger and bigger.  I told my mom about my plant, that maybe the seed was weird, but my mom told me that you gave your plant too little love. She told me that I never gave my plant water; it was always her that gave the water. This is why to check if my mom was really correct, I left my dying plant to see if it would get better and live, and it did! Right now my tomato plant is about 1 and a half inches tall!! Going back to my topic, I described love as being an adventure, which concludes that love and an adventure are both significant to every single person’s lives. A relationship can never be perfect; every couple in the world should have at least one problem with their girlfriend or boyfriend. It is impossible for a couple who loves each other to be flawless and never fight during their loving relationship. Same for an adventure, a journey can never only contain happy memories but also contains hard memories.  This is the reason why my favorite metaphor of love is that “LOVE IS AN ADVENTURE.” Love is just another word for an adventure, and if you just started to feel like you love someone, it means that you are starting a long fun and tiring adventure.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF!!

I am the one on the left :)
Hi! For my second post I am going to write about the topic, “Describe Yourself.” I am a Junior this year! (16, two more years until I become a senior and graduate!) I live in a small island in the pacific Ocean that is a part of the Nothern Mariana Islands, Saipan. Saipan is a beautiful island with pure air and unbelievable scenery. You could see the ocean from any part of the island here! My full name is Seoung Hyun Lee but people at school call me SH because my name is very difficult for some people to pronounce. Just by reading my name you can kind of figure out that I am Asian, more specifically Korean. I am FULL Korean. I was born in Seoul,Korea but when I was four years old my family moved to Guam. (Guam is an island in the Pacific ocean right next to Saipan) I lived in Guam for five years and when I was in second grade I moved to Shanghai,China. We moved to China because my auntie lived there, but the main reason was because my mom wanted us to be well educated and thought of it as a good opportunity for us ( my brother Joon and I) to live in Shanghai and learn Chinese. When we moved around from country to country it was always my mom, my brother and me because my dad stayed in Korea to make money and support our family. We lived in Shanghai for about 3 and a half years then we moved to this beautiful island, Saipan. I have lived in Saipan for about four years and a half because I moved here (Saipan) when I was in 6th grade fourth quarter.

I am the right one on the grass :)

I talked about where I lived before and where I live now in the first paragraph, but not a lot about myself. >< I don't have one word to describe myself, but if I had to pick a word, I would pick ATHLETIC. I love to play sports! During the sixteen years of my life, I have learned golf, ping pong, tennis, Taek Won Do, and how to swim. I liked learning new sports but I hated having to practice because I got so tired but as I started to play more and more sports, every sport became really fun to me. I enjoyed school sports more because we would always play the game, and that's what I like the BEST! I ALWAYS joined the school teams, including the soccer team, badminton team, floor hockey team, volleyball team, basketball team, and the swimming team. At my school now we only have a volleyball team and a basketball team, so I play these two sports now. I also play soccer outside of school in a team called MPU. Even though I am athletic I am NOT a tomboy, but also not a GIRLY girl~ I am just in between. :)
I want to dedicate this paragraph to my one and only brother, Joon. This is not off topic because I am describing myself because my brother is one of my family members. :) I only have one sibling, and that is my brother Joon. He is two years older than me and has already graduated high school and is going to go to college. I fought a lot with my brother when I was young. It was almost like a daily routine because we fought almost everyday. We would argue about any little thing for no specific reason, but when we weren't fighting we would have the best brother and sister relationship. From all this fighting, one important thing I learned from my brother was patience. If I was patient, my brother would ease his anger and smile again. Now my brother and I hardly fight and I am happy all the fighting days are over.

New School Year's Resolutions

One of my new school year’s resolution is to get my driver’s license and drive to school by myself. I live in Saipan which is one of the Northern Mariana Islands which is located in the Pacific Ocean. Saipan is part of the American territories, and here in Saipan, you can get your license right after your sixteenth birthday. My goal is to become a better driver than my friend. My friend tends to drive depending on her mood. If she had a good day at school she would drive calmly but if she had a bad day at school then she would drive really fast and dangerously.  I also want to drive better than my brother. In my opinion my brother is one of the worst drivers I have ever seen in the WORLD. My goal is to be a better driver than my brother. My mom is going to teach me how to drive this year. My brother graduated and is going to college so now I will have to learn how to drive because my brother won’t be here to drive me to places. I also want to learn how to drive because if my mom is sick or tired and I suddenly have to go somewhere, I do not want to have to make my mom drive for me.

My second resolution for the new school year is memorize the book, “Word Smart”. This will help me get a better score on the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL. I am not an American citizen so I have to take the TOEFL in order to get into colleges. I have been memorizing vocabulary words but I always forget them quickly. This year I will really concentrate and try my best to reach my goal to memorize the book, “Word Smart” so that it will make me more intelligent and it will help me improve my scores on the English sections of tests I have to take. When I was a freshman in high school I thought I had a lot of time left until I had to take the big tests to go to a good college. I feel like I was a freshman yesterday but now I am already a junior. Now I realized I only have two more years in high school, and then I will have to go to college! For a better future and my knowledge, I hope I can accomplish this goal before next school year.

My third resolution for the new school year is to get straight A’s for all of the classes at school. I learned how important your GPA (grade point average) is when you are going to graduate and go to college. I also learned this year that the valedictorian (the student with the highest GPA in the class) and the Saledictorian (the student with the second highest GPA in the class) are chosen by calculating all of the GPA of your grades from freshmen year to senior year. That shows that you should do your best every school year of your high school years because every year’s GPA grades are added and averaged to get your average for the four years you spent in high school. My brother, Joon was the valedictorian for his class but for his class it was interesting because he tied with his friend Jeong Hwan. The graduation for the seniors last year had two valedictorians and no saledictorians. Even though I wish I could be a valedictorian or the saledictorian for my class, my goal for now is to get all A’s this school year and work as hard as I can to get good grades and make my mom happy that I am her daughter.
